Tracking a strong to severe storms Thursday evening

Good morning and happy Thursday.

We’re starting off with breezy and warm conditions once again, with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s this morning. Highs today will climb into the mid-70s, with a few dry periods early on.

Today is a KQ2 Action Alert Day due to the potential for strong to severe storms later this afternoon and into the evening.

A Level 2 risk is in place for all of northwest Missouri and portions of northeast Kansas, with a Level 3 risk clipping areas west of Brown and Atchison counties in Kansas.

The main threats with this system will be large hail, damaging winds, and localized flooding. We also can’t rule out a brief, spin-up tornado as the line moves through.

Storms are expected to develop along a dry line later this evening. Ahead of that, a few lighter, prefrontal showers and storms are possible after lunchtime—something we’ll be monitoring closely.

Once that initial line moves through, a cold front will sweep in from the north, bringing cooler temperatures and clearing conditions.

We’ll see sunshine return on Friday, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Warmer temperatures return for the weekend, along with additional rain chances beginning Saturday evening and continuing into Sunday.

With thunderstorms expected, be sure to have the KQ2 Storm Tracker app downloaded to stay up to date and receive alerts for your location.
