Tracking continued rain Thursday and flooding concerns

Abigail McCluskey

Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected Thursday as a cold front slowly moves through the region. The front will help trigger multiple rounds of rain, with the heaviest rainfall continuing through tonight.

Temperatures will reach the upper 60s to mid-70s Thursday before the cold front moves through. Behind the front, cooler and drier air will arrive for Friday, with highs generally in the 60s.

The flooding threat remains the biggest concern. Parts of the area have already received 2 to 4 inches of rain, and another 0.5 to 1.5 inches is possible through tonight. Areas farther south, along and south of the Missouri River, could see 1 to 3 inches of additional rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible.

Several rivers, creeks and streams are already under Flood Warnings. The Missouri River at St. Joseph is forecast to rise above flood stage late Thursday evening and continue rising into the weekend.

A Flood Watch remains in effect through late Thursday night for portions of NW Missouri and NE Kansas.

Once the system exits, conditions will turn much quieter. Friday will be cooler and dry, with highs in the 60s. High pressure will keep the weekend mostly dry, with temperatures warming from the 60s Saturday into the 70s Sunday. A gradual warming trend continues into next week, with temperatures returning to the 70s and eventually the low 80s.
