Mumps case confirmed at John Glenn Elementary

ANDREW COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Savannah R-III School District confirmed a case of the mumps at John Glenn Elementary.

The district notified families on Friday and said it also notified the Andrew County Health Department.

The ACHD is actively conducting contact tracing and will contact any individuals who may have had close contact with the person who is ill.

Families who are contacted will receive additional guidance directly from the health department.

The district said it cannot share identifying information about the individual involved in the case.

Mumps is a viral illness that spreads through saliva or respiratory droplets. Symptoms may include:

  • Swelling of the cheeks or jaw (salivary glands)
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Symptoms typically appear 16 to 18 days after exposure, but can develop between 12 and 25 days.

The district advised families to monitor their children for symptoms and, if a child develops any of the aforementioned symptoms, to keep them home and contact their health provider.

Savannah's Spring Break will take place next week, where it said all school buildings will be closed, allowing time for additional cleaning before students return on Monday, March 16.

Families with questions about mumps or possible exposure should contact the ACHD for guidance at 816-324-3139.
