‘No credible threat;’ KCAD releases statement about potential device inside MCI terminal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KQTV) -- A security threat at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) Sunday morning led to the evacuation of the terminal and a multi-hour disruption for travelers after reports of a potential device on airport property.

The Kansas City Aviation Department (KCAD) received a call about a possible device inside the terminal and the parking garage, prompting an immediate and large-scale response from law enforcement.

Airport police, along with the FBI and other agencies, swiftly moved to assess the situation and secure the area.

As a precaution, KCAD staff evacuated travelers from the terminal.

Incoming flights were temporarily held on the taxiway, preventing them from reaching the gates while the investigation was underway.

The terminal evacuation lasted approximately two hours before law enforcement determined there was no credible threat to the airport or those inside.

However, during a sweep of the parking garage, a K9 unit identified a vehicle on the top floor as suspicious.

Following protocol, the Kansas City Police Department's Bomb and Arson unit was called to the scene to investigate.

As a result, the garage remained closed for an additional three hours.

After an examination, Bomb and Arson investigators determined that the vehicle posed no threat.

The all-clear was given, and KCAD staff began working to resume normal operations and minimize further disruptions.

KCAD and FBI further went on to encourage anybody who becomes aware of suspicious activity or anything concerning to report that to law enforcement.
