ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph School District Board of Education met for a special work session Tuesday, where it walked through the latest updates to the district’s reorganization plan.

Superintendent Ashly McGinnis said one of the next big steps is getting bids for renovations at Benton High School. She also noted that decisions about coaching positions will be coming up soon.

The board also discussed Lafayette High School's transition into a middle school.

McGinnis said if current coaches at Lafayette are interested in moving into coaching roles at Central or Benton, the district wants to take their preferences into account.

She emphasized how the district is trying to make sure staff members don’t lose income during these changes, especially when it comes to extra-duty stipends that many rely on as part of their paychecks.

McGinnis also shared excitement about Benton High School’s basketball team going to state, wishing the entire student body could attend games to show support; however, there are attendance guidelines the district is directed to follow.

“We are so excited for the Benton High School in the success for the girls and boys basketball team, but unfortunately, we also have guidance from state that dictates how we handle attendance,” McGinnis said.
