Goodwin’s 40 points lifts Benton over Vashon in Class 4 3rd place overtime battle
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KQTV) — 32 minutes just wasn't enough to decide the winner of the Class 4 third place boys basketball game on Saturday, but in overtime, the Benton Cardinals found a way to defeat Vashon.
Eight of Benton's 12 points in overtime came from the free throw line and that lifted the Cardinals to a 84-81 victory against Vashon.
With just seconds to go in regulation and down, 72-70, Benton needed a bucket. Senior Lincoln Goodwin's shot was off the mark, but guard Xavier Warner was there to get the board and tie the game at 72.
These two teams trade buckets in the four minutes of overtime. Vashon lead the Cardinals 81-80 with 21 seconds to play, but with already 36 points and 11-for-13 from the free throw line, Goodwin knocked down two free throws to give Benton the 82-81 advantage.
Vashon had a chance to re-take the lead, but Benton was able to get the ball back off a missed shot and Goodwin added two more free throws to finish it out, 84-81.
Goodwin finished with a game-high 40 points including 15-for-17 from the free throw line. He added in eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 36 minutes. Warner added in 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
The Cardinals had just six turnovers in this one.
"These four years have been special, nothing but special. Then to share it with these guys behind me, there's nothing better to do than be with my brothers," said Goodwin. "There's no better way to go out and get it done with them."
"Southside mentality man. No quit, no give up, no waiver, all out toughness till the very end," said head coach Jared Boone. These guys are brothers, for them to go out with a win in their last game, it means a lot. "These guys are definitely gonna be special to me for a long time. They won't realize now the mark that they've left, but when they get together years from now and talk about their four years in high school, it's memories like this that they'll cherish forever."
Benton finished the season 30-2 and a Class 4 third-place trophy.
