Camp Geiger hosts Easter Egg-Stravaganza, Easter Egg hunt for local youth
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- With a beautiful day offering the perfect excuse to enjoy the sun and fresh air, staff and volunteers at Camp Geiger welcomed families for an early spring celebration aimed at getting kids outdoors.
For the past five years, the camp has organized this event following the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a day filled with outdoor activities designed to help children soak in the sunshine after the winter months.
While organizers admitted the weather hasn’t always cooperated in prior years, this year’s event was greeted with clear skies and warm temperatures.
The celebration featured a variety of activities leading up to the main event.
Families enjoyed crafts including sun catchers and painting, as well as face painting, tug of war, giant Jenga, and field games. Outdoor skill stations such as BB guns, archery, and slingshots were also available.
Volunteers laid out 6,500 Easter eggs for the highlight of the day: a giant Easter egg hunt in the valley.
Brandon Keller, Cub Scout Chairman for the Pony Express Council, emphasized that the event serves a greater purpose beyond simple entertainment.
"I think it's a great opportunity to really showcase the outdoor part of scouting," Keller said. "There's so many youth opportunities involved. Scouting is so unique in developing those life skills, but also outdoor skills and just getting kids maybe away from video games and that screen to enjoy the great outdoors."
When asked about the benefits of being outside after winter, Keller highlighted the health advantages of sunlight and fresh air.
"Sunlight has actually been connected to not having that depression, that kind of seasonal depression," Keller explained. "So we do see a lot of individuals pulling out of that. Just that fresh air has the health benefits as well. It gets you moving more, particularly in the spring. You tend to see more people out walking and enjoying that sunlight as well."
For families who could not attend Saturday’s festivities, Camp Geiger plans to host additional events in the coming weeks.
