PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. (KQTV) -- State Senator Tony Leutkemeyer announced he will be running for Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Thursday.

The two-term Senator, who represents Buchanan and Platte counties, serves as the Majority Leader.

He earned his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law and clerked for a judge on the Missouri Supreme Court, and eventually entered private legal practices in the Kansas City area.

The announcement comes after both current Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd made a decision to retire last week, causing the PLatte County Board of Elections to reopen the candidate filings for this week.

The current First Assistant Prosecutor, Mark Gibson withdrew his candidacy after he filed for the position on March 31.

Leutkemeyer is currently running unopposed.
