Al J. Mueller Construction wraps up Buchanan County Fairgrounds project

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- Plans for the Buchanan County Fairgrounds are becoming a reality, as construction wraps up at the site.
Al J. Mueller Construction Company is the lead contractor for the $1.6 million project.
Designed with the community in mind, the new fairgrounds aim to provide children, families and local organizations with a welcoming place to learn new skills, grow through hands-on experiences and showcase their hard work.
Ethan Kilgore, project manager said the project was completed on the same property as the existing East Buchanan Middle School.
“It is a multi-purpose building, it is insulated, it has got the 70/30 dirt to sand mix in it which is mainly for livestock, shows, rodeos and really can use it for whatever,” Kilgore said.
Construction on the project began last fall and wrapped up earlier this year, between late winter and early spring.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for June 18 and organizers hope events will begin shortly after.
“I don’t think we have more projects like this for the county but obviously we are always willing to work and put stuff out which makes AL. J Mueller so unique,” he added.
Kilgore said the company works closely with clients from the very beginning — whether they already have a design in mind or are simply starting with an idea.
He also said the building was designed to serve the community for years to come and can be used for much more than one purpose.
“I think the community kids will really be able to take advantage since it is great for Agricultural education which is also huge in the community,” Kilgore said.
Kilgore added that he’s excited to use the building himself in the future after enjoying the process of helping build it.
Cheri Morton, facilities manager for the fairgrounds, said once the facility is fully complete, it will host a wide variety of activities.
At first, restrooms and concession stands from the activities building will support events at the new arena.
“There will be a nice save path from the arena over to this building. Within the building we also have the classrooms and the gym area,” Morton said.
Morton said the project benefited greatly from support across the community, including help from dedicated contractors and local donations.
