ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The St. Joseph Police Department said one of its own is preparing to "step into the ring" for a good cause.

SJPD Officer Lucas Winder will represent the department in the Kansas City Metro Crime Commission Guns and Hoses Boxing Event, where he will face off against Independence Fire Department Firefighter Drake Patty.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium.

The Guns and Hoses event raises funds for the Surviving Spouses and Family Endowment Fund, or SAFE. The fund provides financial assistance and support to the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.

The fund helps ensure the loved ones of fallen heroes receive assistance during difficult moments.

A Facebook post from SJPD said Officer Winder has dedicated countless hours to training for the event and is proud to represent the department while helping raise awareness about SAFE.

At the end of the night, the event showcases the strong partnership between police, fire and EMS personnel.
