United Way of Greater St. Joseph calls for reading volunteers, books

File

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- United Way of Greater St. Joseph is calling for volunteers to read with children this summer through its Reading Adventure program, and for new and gently used books to be given to children through its programs.

Children get connected with a reading volunteer during the summer through one of United Way's reading programs:

  • InterServ school-age child care program at Wesley Center and Sojourn Church
  • Noyes Home for Children
  • YMCA school-age child care program at Buchanan County Fairgrounds
  • Bartlett Center Youth Program

Each program is held at a different time, and volunteers are needed in July and August to read with students for approximately 40 minutes.

Volunteers can sign up to read once, a few times or on a regular schedule.

Children in the United Way Reading Adventure program will also receive books throughout the summer to encourage reading at home. United Way also distributes books through several programs to help build home libraries.

New or gently used books are requested for children ages six through 12.

The United Way Reading Adventure, launched in 2011, works to help students maintain their reading skills over the summer months when school is out, as well as help students with skills throughout the school year.

More than 800 people have volunteered for United Way Reading Adventure since 2011. Individuals and organizations interested in volunteering to read or donating books are encouraged to contact Jodi Flurry at 816-364-2381 or jodi.flurry@stjosephunitedway.org or register online at stjosephunitedway.org.
