ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- A local office is seeking community support for its upcoming walk to recognize National Breastfeeding Month and World Breastfeeding Week.

The St. Joseph Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) office will hold a walk from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the East Hills Mall Food Court.

The event will feature snacks, refreshments and raffles following the walk.

August is recognized as National Breastfeeding Month and Aug. 1-7 is recognized worldwide as World Breastfeeding Week.

Through the event, the St. Joseph WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program will be celebrating breastfeeding moms in the community.

In addition, the office is asking for assistance in showing support to breastfeeding moms in the St. Joseph Community.

According to a newsletter sent from AFL-CIO Community Services, breastfeeding is the optimal food choice for infants. WIC said it supports and celebrates moms for committing to breastfeeding.

"This event is about more than a walk, it's about visibility, community and letting every nursing mother in St. Joseph know she is not alone," the office said in a Facebook post. "We invite families, heacare providers and community members to come together to for a morning of connection, celebration and support."
