Chiefs hold second day of Training Camp with just quarterbacks and rookies
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) - It was another scorching morning on Sunday for Kansas City Chiefs training camp on MoWest's campus in St. Joseph. The Chiefs' quarterbacks and rookies trying to survive through this heat.
Chiefs defensive back and fourth round draft pick out of Oregon, Jadon Canady, is just one of the many new faces in the Kansas City defensive backs room this season, Canady, along with fellow draft pick Mansoor Delane will be asked to do a lot on the back end for the Chiefs' defensive scheme this year. He's ready to show what he can do in this camp and prove that he belongs.
"Obviously, we had some guys leave last year (in the secondary), so this year basically it's a whole new back end," said Canady. "Myself and Mansoor talk a lot about the plays, hang out and eat lunch together, so we're still building that bond. For a guy who went 1st round, 4th round or guy who's here on the practice squad, they don't really care who you are and they hold each player to the same standard."
Kansas City fifth round draft pick out of Cincinnati, wide receiver Cyrus Allen is continuing to build trust and connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Allen even said the Chiefs have been his favorite team to play with on the Madden video game, and that's helped a little bit with his understanding of how Mahomes plays.
"It's still a surreal moment for me. I used to play the game with Pat a lot. I have an old teammate that loves the Chiefs, so I'm pretty familiar with what you do," said Allen. "Everything is pretty much timing. This isn't college any more. This is big boy ball, so everything is pretty much timing. I'm on his time and everything is very precise in this league because they have other good players too."
Another fifth round draft pick, running back Emmett Johnson out of Nebraska, has been one of the earliest players out at practice each day, building a routine to do the little things better and help this Chiefs team. Johnson is also quickly getting accustomed to the hard coaching style of returning Kansas City offensive coordinator and running backs coach Eric Bieniemy.
"He's going to push you a lot, and he wants the best for me at the end of the day. I don't take anything personal. I pride myself in hard coaching, so I, I really love that he's here just pushing me to be better every single day," said Johnson. "At this level especially, I feel like you have to do the extra things like recovery, you have to get in the building early. You have to stay late to be successful at this level. I'm kind of learning through my routine right now. I've been asking guys, I have older guys like Ameer Abdullah who played at Nebraska, kind of just picking his brain on recovery because he's been playing for a long time. So that's what I've been doing."
The Chiefs' quarterbacks and rookies will have one more practice Monday morning on July 27th before having an off day on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, July 29th, Training Camp officially kicks off with the general public being able to attend.
