DC Freedom Rock Foundation works to bring memorial to Troy, Kansas

TROY, Kan. (KQTV) -- As part of a national tour, the DC Freedom Rock Foundation is looking to bring a memorial to Troy, Kansas, to honor service members and preserve local military history.

A Freedom Rock is a large, custom-painted granite memorial created by artist Ray "Bubba" Sorenson, which features local military history and stories that serve as a lasting tribute to those who have served.

According to the DC Freedom Rock Foundation, the granite rock will be set on Sept. 1 at the Troy Community Building.

Sorenson is scheduled to arrive and paint the rock starting Sept. 21.

So far, local organizations and individuals have raised nearly $10,000 toward the initial goal to cover Sorenson's work and are working to raise the remaining funds to paint the rock.

The Doniphan County Freedom Rock Foundation said its new goal is $19,700 to cover the needed expenses.

Although the foundation said it would look to meet its new goal, fundraising for the rock will not stop, as it would like to add future improvements, such as an overhead cover, concrete walkway and lighting.
