SJFD responds to St. Joseph Avenue fire

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- St. Joseph fire crews and emergency responders responded to a fire at St. Joseph Avenue and Middleton Street Monday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the area just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12.

When a KQ2 reporter arrived on scene, a trailer was engulfed in smoke.

"They (fire crews) got it out within 20 minutes of that being on fire. The whole trailer went up pretty quickly," said a witness who wanted to remain anonymous for her safety.

The witness, who said she works in the area, was doing her opening routine when someone banged on the front door of the business, calling for her to get out due to the fire.

"I ran out the building and looked, and there was like, naked people jumping out of the window...It was a horrendous sight," she said.

A fire official on scene said there were about five to six people inside the home, but was unsure about injuries; however, three dogs from inside the home were found and confirmed dead.

KQ2 will update this story as more information becomes available.
