MISSOURI (KQTV) -- As ghosts, vampires and goblins prepare for their night of fright, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is offering safety tips for the whole family ahead of Halloween.

Halloween this year falls on Saturday, Oct. 31.

MSHP said during this exciting time, children could dart in front of a vehicle. Drivers are urged to slow down and drive with extra caution.

Additionally, an increase in the number of slow-moving vehicles may be seen in neighborhoods as motorists pick up and drop off their trick-or-treaters.

Parents are encouraged to remind children of safe trick-or-treat practices, such as: approach only familiar houses that are well-lit, don't enter a stranger's house or vehicle and look both ways before crossing the street.

When choosing a costume, there are some safety additions for those dressing up. MSHP said trick-or-treaters should consider wearing makeup rather than wearing a mask, which can obstruct vision.

Wearing light-colored costumes and/or adding reflective tape to dark costumes will help drivers see trick-or-treaters.

MSHP also said an adult should always accompany small children, and older children should stay in groups while out during Halloween festivities.

Halloween isn't just for children, and MSHP shared the sentiment that anyone attending a Halloween party that includes intoxicants should designate a sober driver for the trip home or use a rideshare app.
