ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Missouri Amendment 7 a constitutional amendment that would create the "Show-Me Prosperity Fund," a state-managed investment fund aimed at eventually eliminating all state-imposed taxes has failed.

Lawmakers could put money into the fund, and people could donate to it too. The state treasurer would invest the money in the stock market, specifically, funds that track the S&P 500.

No money could be taken out until the fund's investment earnings are enough to replace the state's tax revenue. Missouri brings in about $18 billion a year in state taxes. The Missouri Budget Project estimates the fund would need to grow to at least $609 billion before taxes could be eliminated.

Once taxes are gone, they couldn't come back unless the fund can't meet its obligations.

Buchanan County voters voted against Amendment 7 with 59.15% (14,212 voters)of the vote, while 40.85% (9,815 voters) in favor of Amendment 7.

Here's how the state of Missouri voted, the state of Missouri voted against Amendment 7 with 60.55% (1,251,889) voting no, 39.45% of voters (815,744) voting in favor of the amendment.
