Annual Pony Express Re-Ride to celebrate 250th anniversary of US

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Communities across the nation will come together this June to celebrate a large part of St. Joseph's history and the U.S.'s 250th anniversary.

The Pony Express Re-Ride will depart from St. Joseph at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, June 15, at the Patee House Museum, and arrive in Sacramento, California, around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 25.

Riders will carry a commemorative mochila (mail pouch) in a continuous relay, day and night, retracing the historic trail across multiple states.

Although the Pony Express only operated for 18 months from 1860 to 1861, it became a symbol of American ingenuity and resilience, especially at a time when cross-country communication was slow and uncertain.

The Pony Express connected the eastern and western United States with unprecedented speed, carrying vital news, personal letters and government dispatches across nearly 2,000 miles of rugged terrain.

"The Pony Express represents the spirit of perseverance and unity that continues to define America," said event organizers in a news release. "As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation, this Re-Ride reminds us of the determination it took to connect people across great distances- physically, culturally and politically."

The Re-Ride is organized by dedicated volunteers and members of historical associations who work year-round to preserve and promote the story of the Pony Express.

The public is encouraged to attend the mochila exchanges, meet the riders, take photos and engage with local Pony Express volunteers at each major stop.

Forts and interpretive centers along the route will offer special programs and trail information.

The ride can be followed live via GPS tracking at https://nationalponyexpress.org/re-ride/follow-the-ride/.
