Local program launches annual community-wide reading initiative

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- A local reading program has launched its third annual community-wide reading initiative.

St. Joseph Reads is a community-wide literacy initiative that aims to foster a culture of reading and improve literacy outcomes across the region.

WE READ 2026 encourages residents across the community to read the same book, participate in discussions and events centered around shared themes and meaningful conversation.

The featured book for 2026 is Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, and tells a story of a mysterious elderly man who discovers 92 pencil portraits of residents displayed in a small town coffeehouse.

Theo purchases the portraits from an artist and personally gives each one to its "rightful owner," thus forming friendships and inspiring kindness, healing and a stronger sense of community.

Free copies of the book are available, while supplies last, at Rolling Hills Library and all branches of the St. Joseph Public Library.

Community members are invited to participate in upcoming book discussions and special events held at various locations throughout St. Joseph.
