ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)-- St. Joseph Mayor Larry Miller will proclaim Nov. 1 as Extra Mile Day, recognizing the individuals and organizations who go above and beyond to make a difference in the community.

Extra Mile Day shines a spotlight on people whose volunteer work, generosity and everyday acts of kindness help improve the lives of others and make the community stronger.

The observance began in 2009 after EXTRA MILE America founder Shawn Anderson completed a symbolic 4,000-mile bicycle ride across the country.

Although Anderson wasn't a cyclist at the time, he used the journey as an opportunity to interview 200 people who were going the extra mile by accomplishing something extraordinary or overcoming major challenges.

What started with just 23 participating cities in 2009 has grown into a nationwide observance.

In 2026, more than 500 cities across all 50 states are expected to take part.
