ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- Members of Buchanan County Kids proposed Proposition K, which would create a dedicated funding source for programs and services that benefit children ages 19 and younger.

If voters approve the measure on the Nov. 3 election, county commissioners would appoint a nine-member board. That board would hire an executive director and develop bylaws and guidelines for local agencies to apply for funding.

Organizations such as the YWCA, Voices of Courage, and Noyes Home for Children would apply for funding to support their services.

The proposed sales tax would apply throughout all of Buchanan County, not just St. Joseph. That means funding would come from purchases by residents, as well as travelers who spend money in the county.

Under state law, the money could be used to support children and families in 10 different service areas.
