MoWest announces school will pause tennis program

MoWest Athletics

ST. JOSEPH, Mo (KQTV) - Missouri Western State University athletics announced on Friday that the school will be pausing its tennis program for the 2026-27 academic year.

The decision by the MWSU Board of Governors comes after the resignation of head coach Alejandro De La Torre in late May. De La Torre has returned to his home country of Spain.

"Due to multiple circumstances, coupled with unfortunate timely factors, the  difficult decision has been made to put the program on a pause," MWSU Director of Athletics Andy Carter said. "The ever-changing landscape of college athletics brings with it a great deal of financial questions and challenges. Universities across the nation at all levels are making difficult decisions to best position themselves for long-term sustainability. This is a situation that is not exclusive to MWSU."

In his five seasons as head coach, De La Torre guided the Griffons to four NCAA tournament appearances. The 2026 roster consisted of six tennis student-athletes, including five international students. The university will honor scholarships for the tennis student-athletes for the 2026-27 academic year.

"This decision is not a reflection on our six tennis student-athletes who have done a wonderful job of representing MoWest on and off the court. Our focus is on them and assisting them in making any decision or transition during this difficult time. We are grateful for Coach De La Torre and his efforts over the past five seasons. Alejandro is a tremendous coach and an even better man and he will be truly missed."
