MoWest women’s soccer earns narrow home victory over Maryville University

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) - The MoWest women's soccer team survived the heat Saturday morning and held on to defeat Maryville University, 1-0.

The lone goal was scored by MoWest freshman Jaida Douch on an assist from sophomore Rosemary Pujado 8 minutes into the second half, it was Douch's first collegiate goal as a Griffon.

"I saw a row going down the line and I know (Pujado) can cross it, so I went, I got into that space and then it came right to me," said Douch. "I just popped it over and it was just such a thrill!"

MoWest redshirt sophomore goal keeper Morgan Byrd had some clutch saves as well in the second half to preserve the victory. Byrd ended with 5 saves total.

"Just being loud, I know they're getting tired. It's 100 degrees. They're working their butts off and just being there for my team at the end of the day," said Byrd.

"It probably wasn't the most pretty performance or the cleanest performance," said head coach Jabob Plocher. "But being able to kind of go into our bench and utilize our depth and then just having that mentality of we're going to continue to work and take advantage of some opportunities. We've had quite a few new players step up and be able to find the back of the net."

MoWest improves to 3-0-1 on the season and next hosts Southeastern Oklahoma State on Wednesday, September 9th at 1 pm.
