The Missouri Department of Transportation is working with Burns & McDonnell as the I-229 corridor project moves into its next phase in downtown St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- The Missouri Department of Transportation is working with Burns & McDonnell as the I-229 corridor project moves into its next phase in Downtown St. Joseph, including plans for the double-decker bridge.

In 2025, the I-229 Moving Forward Environmental Assessment was completed.

The Federal Highway Administration issued what’s called a “Finding of No Significant Impact” for the preferred option, which would remove the current bridge and replace it with a new four-lane roadway.

Through the summer of 2026, the project team will be gathering survey data, defining right-of-way needs and environmental impacts, coordinating with the railroad, and continuing outreach with stakeholders and the public.

Full design for the project is expected to start in 2027, with construction currently planned between 2028 and 2030.
